Early Life
Stephen Jackson was born on 5th April 1978 in Houston, Texas, United States, and grew up in Port Arthur, Texas. While growing up, Stephen was brought up by his mother, Juliette, who worked two jobs as a single parent to sustain the family. Stephen also worked at his grandfather’s food restaurant in Port Arthur by serving tables and washing dishes. When Stephen was sixteen years old, his half-brother Donald Buckner died from head injuries at the age of 25. The violent tragedy affected Stephen, and he wished he was there to help and protect him. Stephen went to Lincoln High School and led the school in his junior years for the state championship. However, he faced academic ineligibility and transferred to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, receiving the All-American Awards in 1996. He participated in several Phoenix Suns pickup games after a fellow Arizona native and a family friend, Virginia Bibby, brought him to Phoenix Suns during tryouts. In 1997, Stephen was drafted to Phoenix Suns but was later waived. He played for three years in different countries until 2000, when New Jersey Nets signed him.
